India is set to achieve a major milestone in its semiconductor industry with the launch of its first ‘Made-in-India’ chip in September or October 2025. Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Ashwini Vaishnaw, announced the update while addressing the media in Bengaluru.
Dholera to Become India’s Semiconductor Hub
A major boost to India’s semiconductor industry comes from Tata Electronics, which is partnering with Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (PSMC) to set up India’s first semiconductor fab in Dholera, Gujarat. This facility is expected to play a crucial role in positioning India as a global semiconductor manufacturing hub.
Government’s ₹334 Crore Investment in Semiconductor R&D
The government has allocated ₹334 crore to the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, for advanced research and development (R&D) in gallium nitride (GaN) technology. GaN semiconductors are widely used in telecom, power electronics, and defense applications, making this investment a significant step towards India’s self-reliance in chip manufacturing.
IISc Develops India’s First E-Mode GaN Power Transistor
As part of India’s push for semiconductor innovation, IISc Bengaluru has successfully developed the country’s first-ever e-mode gallium nitride power transistor. According to IISc, the transistor’s performance matches some of the best global benchmarks, strengthening India’s position in the semiconductor sector.
PLI Scheme for Semiconductor Components Coming Soon
To further boost the semiconductor industry, the government will soon introduce a Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme specifically for semiconductor components. This initiative aims to attract more investment, boost local manufacturing, and reduce dependence on imports.
